Wintery Wednesday

Last week was a big week, New Terrain was dismantled, dispersed and the remaining paintings tucked away in the studio while new work continues to be made. Mountains and snow have not been worked out of my system yet and what a perfect time to celebrate snow paintings but the beginning of winter. Craig Krull in Santa Monica has mounted three shows celebrating winter with a few of my small paintings in the mix.

Show runs through February 2, 2014

New work includes more of my mountain getaways, more animals and yes, the beautiful wintery seashore is also prominent. One of my favorite times of the year is winter at the seaside, the light on the ocean, the clear blue of the sky reflected on the water and the extreme tides. It's difficult to decide what to paint first!

If you are looking for music!! My choice would be

Carl & the Coconuts
900 State Street {Marshall's Patio}

Born in Hilo, Hawaii, Carl is an acclaimed ukulele player, vocalist, and guitarist who enjoys a following from Hawaii to Japan to our own mainland. Carl has been performing professionally for more than 30 years and also teaches ukulele and guitar at SBCC Adult Education. It was during these classes he met Martin Osborn and Tod Matz - together they formed the band Carl & The Coconuts.

Mezcal Martini
Paseo Nuevo Center Court

Mezcal Martini is a Latin jazz band from Santa Barbara, been playing together for more than five years: Colin Griffiths, James Siu, Michael Wallace, John Leonard , Bruce Hale, Jeff Davis and Armand Renga. The band takes a very non-traditional approach towards Jazz standards by infusing them with Latin rhythms.  Their music is punctuated with infectious grooves and scintillating horn lines.

Hope to see you out on the town!

Abundant Thanks and Heartfelt Gratitude

The reception this month was wonderful and a big thanks to all those who came out to show support. It was great to see so many people. The show runs through the end of November so there is plenty of time to see! I will be at the First Thursday reception in both October and November to answer questions or to just dole out hugs to anyone I may have missed the first night. Love love.

September Countdown

A new exhibition of paintings at Sullivan Goss, Santa Barbara will open First Thursday in September. I'm marking the weeks as the show creeps closer and tethered to the studio finishing paintings. As in the past, there will be a large grid of 12x12" panels. I keep finding new source material so the number increases with each passing week. Recently finished:

Home Again

Paintings home from abroad are welcomed with open arms and eyes. They were finished and shipped off before there was time to absorb them. It's nice to look and be reminded, feel, the path, the journey.

Spring Plein Air

Outdoorsy, high in the pines, on the deck, mountain dwelling, painting. It doesn't stink. Another spring trying my hand at plein air painting. I like it and I don't. It's distracting and nervy, not to mention frustrating toting equipment to locations and the time setting up just to make a mark. Still, I try.

Ode

... to the long disregarded blog. Sadly, Facebook has usurped your power, made you a distant object in the rear view mirror of my to do list. You are a passing thought, a "should" and then dismissed with a sigh.

Facebook has made it so easy to share, too easy for the slovenly, with it's quick 120 character punchlines. Does anyone really regard those as ambient intimacy as we are told we should? Or are they merely easier to brush off than a lengthy blog post, or even the briefest of blog entries, that requires more clicking of keys to acquire the meat of a thought.

Like many things, dearest blog, you will morph, you will transform. Let us be mindful of the possibility that your new incarnation may be the Monarch that once was the caterpillar and not another application that lulls us into sleepy discontent as the time wiles away.
